For Your Consideration

While February 24th may seem light years away, the date will be here sooner than you know (or sooner than we know, perhaps) and with it brings the 85th Academy Awards. Once a year, each and every February (or March), the entertainment community and film enthusiasts from around the world tune in to watch actors, actresses, directors and a host of other film industry professionals descend onto Hollywood to see who will take home the highest honors in filmmaking. The month of November marks the beginning of “Oscar Season” where some of entertainment’s most eye-catching “For Your Consideration” advertising is put to print in various entertainment trades like Variety, The Hollywood Reporter, Deadline and so on to drive awareness and position a film as a frontrunner in a specific nomination category or in several. From there, the Academy’s 6,000 voting members are responsible for selecting nominations in their respective fields, per Oscar.org: actors nominate actors, film editors nominate film editors, etc., but all voting members are eligible to vote for best picture nominees. After these results are tallied and announced, final ballots are mailed out to members who are eligible to vote in all categories. The results are tabulated by PricewaterhouseCoopers and revealed five days later at the Dolby Theater.

Bravo Design, Inc. has worked on Academy Award campaign (“For Your Consideration) ads for about the last decade. Here are some we’ve done over the course of the last five years so, some in collaboration with WorksLAthe Refinery Creative and the Cimmaron Group. Cloud Atlas

Cloud Atlas explores the actions and consequence of five separate but loosely connected narratives that, when woven together from past to present, affect the outcome of a sixth on a future post-apocalyptic island. From a nineteenth-century clerk to an aspiring composer to an investigative journalist to a best selling publisher to a clone created for slave labor back to the island, the story follows a single act of kindness that ripples through time to inspire a revolution. No dialogue summarizes this better than when a character is told that his life amounts to “no more than one drop in a limitless ocean,” he asks, “Yet what is any ocean but a multitude of drops?”

Roger Ebert describes Cloud Atlas as “one of the most ambitious films ever made. You will want to see this daring and visionary film. Anywhere you go where movie people gather, it will be discussed.” HSX predicts that the movie will open at $19M this weekend.

Argo and Here Comes the Boom

In 1979, when the Iranian revolution reaches a boiling point, Islamic militants led by the Ayatollah storm the US embassy in Tehran taking 52 Americans hostages. Unbeknownst to the Iranians, six are able to escape and take shelter at the Canadian ambassador’s home. The Central Intelligence Agency decides that they can’t stay there because if they are found, they along with the ambassador will be publicly executed in the streets. With the CIA at a loss to figure out how to smuggle the hostages safely out of Iran, exfiltration specialist, Tony Mendez (Ben Affleck), hatches a plan to extract them under the guise that they are a Canadian film crew scouting out locations for a made up science-fiction movie, set in space, called Argo. Where, after having established their covers, they’ll then be able to walk right past the Revolutionary Guard using their new fake identities with no one the wiser. As Mendez’s boss, Jack O’Donnell (Bryan Cranston) puts it, “This is the best bad idea we have.”

Rex Reed of The New York Observer writes, “Gifted, intelligent and full of cogent ideas, Mr. Affleck can almost always be depended on to come up with something fascinating, coherent and thoroughly cinematic. Argo, his third feature film as a director after Gone Baby Gone (2007) and The Town (2010), is no exception. It grabbed me by the lapels and held my attention for two solid hours without a sideward glance, and I can’t wait to see it again.” HSX predicts that Argo will open at $18.8M. From the raving reviews we’ve seen thus far, we think the film will crush those expectations.

In Here Comes the Boom, Scott Voss (Kevin James) is a 40-something burned out high school biology teacher about a decade past his “teacher of the year prime” who is stirred to action when one of his colleagues (Henry Winkler), a teacher who is still inspiring children well into his career, faces the chopping block due to cutbacks in extracurricular activities at his school. In an effort to raise money, Voss picks up a side job moonlighting as a competitive mixed martial arts fighter. Lucky for him, and the school, Voss was formerly a collegiate wrestler. But despite the fact that he’s pretty well over the hump, and everyone thinks he’s crazy, Voss becomes a sensation when he rallies the entire school.

Here Comes the Boom, Bravo Design

Roger Moore writes, “Kid-friendly funnyman Kevin James is at his cuddliest in Here Comes the Boom. He’s developed a comfortable screen presence that takes away the impression that he was working too hard for laughs. James, [Henry] Winkler, [Salma] Hayek and [Bas] Rutten make an amusing ensemble and click together.” HSX is predicting that this film opens at around $15M.

Taken 2

Set two years after Taken, Bryan Mills (Liam Neeson) gets a surprise visit from his daughter, Kim (Maggie Grace), and his ex-wife, Lenore (Famke Janssen), while on a business trip in Istanbul, but the reunion quickly turns sour when Lenore is taken hostage by Murad Hoxha (Rade Šerbedžija), the father of a man Mills killed in Paris. With Lenore held hostage and Kim on the run, it’s up to Mills to rescue his family by any means necessary.

Bernard Besserglik of The Hollywood Reporter calls the film, “a high-octane mixture of violence and pursuit. The filmmakers know precisely what they are doing, and Taken 2 is in some ways a more polished product than its predecessor, taking full advantage of its exotic locations and pacing its action sequences more successfully.” HSX predicts that the film will open at just over $31M between its 3,000 locations.

As a bonus perk, if you navigate to the film’s Facebook page, you can test your skills to see if you have what it takes to survive being taken or play with the Bryan Mills meme generator.

Premium Rush and The Apparition

In Premium Rush, Joseph Gordon-Levitt plays Wilee (like the coyote), a law student-turned-bike messenger in New York City. Sent uptown to his alma mater on a premium rush run to fetch an envelope destined for Chinatown, he discovers this run is unlike any other when he becomes the target of a bad cop (Michael Shannon) hell bent on stealing the package.

Premium Rush, Bravo DesignBetsy Sharkey of the Los Angeles Times describes the flick as “A tightly wound, radically fresh slice of street action. The action is inventive, extensive and exciting, a bang-up job by cinematographer Mitchell Amundsen, one of the town’s hot new shooters.” Boxoffice.com predicts that the movie will take in around $9M from an estimated 2,100 locations.

Their only hope? An expert in the supernatural, Patrick (Tom Felton), but even with his help, they may already be too late to save themselves from this terrifying force that seems to follow them regardless as to where they run and hide.

The Apparition, Bravo DesignAlison Willmore of Movieline writes, “The framing of the story presents a captivating concept, of a spirit birthed entirely out of human belief, a self-reinforcing thing once it came into being and started scaring people.” Boxoffice.com estimates that this movie will earn about $2.5M in its first weekend from 800 or so locations.

Web Design Update

We were contacted by FASteambanners to redesign their website with a Flex application offering that would allow customers to design their own sports team banners.

Bravo Design, Inc. custom developed a Magento e-commerce based site as our Flash/Flex development network partners concurrently created the “Design Your Own Banner” application. We also developed several custom functions and a custom shipping “Time in Transit Estimator” that was integrated with the UPS API, which allowed the client to manually update their ship-out dates by product type.

The main project goal was to allow FASteambanners to have a more robust web presence and to be able to compete with the other banner printing companies that were rolling out their own custom banner builders.  While several of their competitors appeared to use clipart packages, FASteambanners was illustrating each piece of clipart with the same quality that allowed their airbrush business to thrive.

During the project, the client was informed that their current hosting company would no longer be supporting several of the PHP4 scripts, designed 12 years prior, that ran the website.  As a result, our web development team worked strenuously to complete the project in time for the fall sports season, a very busy time for FASteambanners which would average up to 45 custom banner orders a day.

The website launched successfully, and our client is ecstatic that their products are now being listed, on average, a good 30-50 positions higher on Google’s respective search results.

Hope Springs

Hope Springs, Bravo DesignOne of our two featured releases for this week is Hope Springs. After 30 years of marriage, Arnold (Tommy Lee Jones) and Kay (Meryl Streep), a middle-aged husband and wife, have settled into a comfortable routine. Their kids are grown up and have moved out. Conversation is rare, and sex is nonexistent. Determined to break out of their rut, Kay manages to persuade Arnold to join her on a weeklong counseling session to work on their relationship with renowned author and therapist Dr. Feld (Steve Carell).

Lisa Schwarzbaum of Entertainment Weekly write, “Spectacularly well matched and attuned to each other, Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones offer two of the finest performances of the year.”

Justin Chang of Variety writes, “Hope Springs is an altogether pleasant surprise: a mainstream dramedy that frankly and intelligently addresses the challenges facing a couple after 31 years of marriage. At once entirely accessible and quietly radical in its intimacy and directness, helmer David Frankel’s latest picture to weigh the comforts and dissatisfactions of domestic life wisely lets Meryl Streep and Tommy Lee Jones carry a simple but deeply felt story like the pros they are.”

Hope Springs is being released today, August 8th, and HSX estimates that it will open at about $16M through this weekend.

The Dark Knight Rises

TDKR, Bravo DesignI normally do more extensive write ups for Bravo Design, Inc.’s featured film of the week, but I can’t this time. Up until this point, I’ve avoided trailers, reviews and any potential spoiler alerts for The Dark Knight Rises like landmines. I don’t want to know. But if you absolutely need the rundown, here’s what I do know.

Set eight years after The Dark Knight, when Batman (Christian Bale) went into exile assuming the blame for the death of Harvey Dent, things are better in Gotham. Crime is down, and the city is prosperous. That probably lasts until about six seconds past when Bane’s (Tom Hardy) plane lands, and he delivers his reckoning on the city’s inhabitants. Why? No clue. In the superhero universe, nothing good ever lasts. The underlying irony is that Batman will have to protect the very people that branded him the enemy. Someone [the Joker] predicted this would happen.

Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times writes, “A disturbing experience we live through as much as a film we watch, this dazzling conclusion to director Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy is more than an exceptional superhero movie, it is masterful filmmaking by any standard.”

TDKR has its sights on topping The Avengers’ $209M domestic opening but is expected to open somewhere between $190M and $200M. TDKR is only showing in 2D format, so we’re all curious to see if that’ll have affect the final numbers by several million dollars.

A Bravo Design, Inc. Update

Bravo Design, Inc. is proud to announce that it has completed development and launched websites for three of our clients in the last week.

Bootsy Bellows was the first to go up. It’s a nightclub owned and run by actor David Arquette and members of h.wood group, Darren Dzienciol, John Terzian and Brian Toll. Located on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood, the club has made a huge splash in the short time it’s been open boasting celebrity guests like Robert Pattinson, Katy Perry, Justin Bieber, his girlfriend, Selena Gomez and many more.

The second was for The Son of an Afghan Farmer, a film written and directed by Matthew Levin. The movie follows Muhad, a student from Afghanistan who comes to college in California but is recalled back prematurely, and the changes he undergoes trying to live and thrive in between those two very separate worlds.

Finally, the website of Los Angeles based director / cinematographer Mark A. Ritchie was given a redesign. Mark favors simple, clean designs and took a minimalist approach to his website. The site exists to showcase his excellent work, and he doesn’t want any other design elements interfering with it.

Our regular visitors might notice that we redesigned our site. Love it? Hate it? Let us know in the comment section below.

At the start of Ice Age Continental Drift, Scrat’s relentless pursuit for acorns has world-changing consequences – when he triggers the break-up of Pangaea which leads to Manny, Diego and Sid floating in one direction and the rest of the herd in another, namely Manny’s wife and daughter. Our protagonists’ efforts to rejoin the rest of the pack makes for one of their most arduous journeys to date. The fourth installment in the Ice Age franchise features monkey pirates, life lessons, a love story and more and will be enjoyed by many.

This rock ‘n’ roll romance is told through the heart-pounding hits of Def Leppard, Foreigner, Journey, Posion, REO Speedwagon, Twisted Sister and more. That's My Boy, Bravo Design

As a teenager, Donny Berger (Adam Sandler) fathered a son, whom he named Han Solo (Andy Samberg), and raised him as a single parent up until his 18th birthday when his son disowned him. Now, after not seeing each other for years, Han Solo’s [who at this point has changed his name to Todd] world comes crashing down on the eve of his wedding when an uninvited Donny suddenly shows up broke with a reality TV crew at his heels. Trying desperately to reconnect with his son, Donny is now forced to deal with the repercussions of his bad parenting skills.

Bill Gibron of Pop Matters writes, “That’s My Boy is a gangly guilty pleasure experience that makes you feel foul for enjoying its obvious, out of control bravado. Sandler is terrific as the tacky center of attention and even with a bloated belly and bad mat of monkey fur hair-do, he’s winning.”

Prometheus

Prometheus, Bravo DesignAfter a discovery reveals a clue on the origins of mankind, a team of 17 explorers on the spaceship “Prometheus” goes on a journey that leads them to the darkest corners of the universe where they later become stranded. As they struggle to survive, it becomes clear that the horrors they experience are not just a threat to themselves but to all of mankind.

Glenn Kenny, of MSN Movies, describes the film as “one of the most perfectly perverse and beautifully executed pieces of shock cinema. Absolutely breathtaking and staggering and exhilarating. This is a remarkably scary and eye-popping head rush of a movie, an experience that offers a maximum adrenaline boost at the same time as it engages your intelligence.”

Prometheus will be released on June 8th and is predicted to take in $51M domestically. According to Boxofficemojo.com, it took first place in 14 of its 15 markets last weekend and earned $34.8M. Wrath of the Titans

The film opens, a decade after the prequel left off, with Perseus (Sam Worthington) attempting to live out a quiet life as a fisherman and sole parent to his 10-year-old son, Helius. Unbeknownst to him, a struggle rages between the gods and the titans that threatens his quiet, idyllic life as well as peace on earth.

When the gods created the mortals, it was the mortals’ faith that fueled the gods’ immortality. But as time passed, they began to question their gods. Weakened by mankind’s lack of devotion, the gods struggle to maintain control of the imprisoned titans and their ferocious leader, Kronos, father to the long-ruling brothers Zeus (Liam Neeson), Hades (Ralph Fiennes) and Poseidon (Danny Huston). It was those three that had originally overthrew and banished him to rot in the abyss of Tartarus, a dungeon deep within the cavernous Underworld.

It’s during that very struggle to maintain control that Hades along with Zeus’ own son, Ares (Édgar Ramírez), switch loyalties and make a deal with Kronos to capture Zeus that pulls Perseus off the bench. As Zeus’ remaining powers dwindle, and the titans’ strength grows, hell is unleashed on earth. Enlisting the help of Andromeda (Rosamund Pike), Argenor (Toby Kebbell) and Hephaestus (Bill Nighy), Perseus bravely embarks on a quest into the Underworld to rescue his father, overthrow the titans and save the world.

TimeOut London’s Guy Lodge says, “In a turn of events more surprising than the script, the results are rather good. Replacing Leterrier  [the 2010 Clash of the Titans’ director] with South African journeyman Jonathan Liebesman has righted a world of wrongs: crisper effects, tighter pacing and more inspired casting add up to a sword-and-sandals romp that betters not only its predecessor but even the 1981 original.”

Jordan and Michael Kelly who play three high school friends forever changed when they gain extraordinary superpowers. Deployed in North Africa and Italy to provide security on bombing runs, the squadron was home to some of the best fighter pilots in the US Army Air Corps. The 332nd flew more than 15,000 sorties, completing over 1,500 missions during the war and never lost an escorted bomber to enemy fighters. No other escort unit could claim such a record. When the war ended, the Tuskegee Airmen returned home with 150 Distinguished Flying Crosses, Legions of Merit and the Red Star of Yugoslavia. The group was disbanded in May 1946, but its success has contributed to the integration of minorities into the military. The film’s title comes for the distinctive red painted tails on their P-47 Thunderbolts. George Lucas serves as the executive producer for the project, and it’s the first Lucasfilm production since Radioland Murders (1994) which is not associated with the Indiana Jones or Star Wars franchises.

Joyful Noise

Joyful Noise
January 13, 2012

Coming out in theatres this week is Joyful Noise, a movie that Bravo Design, Inc. had the opportunity to help market.

Joyful Noise (Bravo Design, Inc.)

When the small-town of Pacashau, Georgia falls on difficult times after the untimely death of its choir director, the people look to the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the annual national “Joyful Noise” choir competition, but the once melodic choir is experiencing dissonance between its two leading ladies which threatens to bring everything to a screeching halt. The newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Queen Latifah), a no-nonsense single mother of two teens, stubbornly wants to stick with the choir’s tried-and-true traditional style. While the late director’s widow, G.G. Sparrow (Dolly Parton), believes that a more contemporary sound would be more successful for the competitive choir. Further complicating matters is the arrival of G.G.’s grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan) who has an interest in Vi Rose’s daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer). Sparks between the two cause even more disharmony between G.G. and Vi Rose.

With budget problems looming overhead that threaten to shutdown the choir altogether, the town needs inspiration more than ever. If G.G. and Vi Rose can put their differences aside for the good of their town, they and their choir, may make the most joyous noise of all.

Set during the Bosnian War that engulfed the Balkan region in the early 1990s, In the Land of Blood and Honey tells the story of Danijel and Ajla, two Bosnians from different sides of a brutal conflict characterized by bitter fighting and ethnic cleansing led primarily by Serb forces.

On November 26 and November 28, Angelina stopped by the office to meet with the team to talk about the movie and the promotional material Bravo Design Inc. would create to be given out to members of the press at screenings. She reviewed the mock-ups we created and helped guide the process in sharing the vision she had for telling this incredible story. Very few people can juggle the responsibilities she does with such grace, intelligence and modesty. We were thrilled to work with her and left with a deep level of respect for her by the time our work together was completed. Set for a limited release beginning December 23, the film has already received the Golden Globe nod for “Best Foreign Film.”
