Rio 2

Rio 2 finds our hero Blue (Jesse Eisenberg) living happily in Rio de Janeiro with his wife, Jewel (Anne Hathaway), and their three young chicks. But when an entire flock of their species, the endangered blue macaw, is discovered 2,000 miles away deep in the Amazon rainforest, Blue and company take off to investigate. What they find is that the rainforest macaws’ patriarch is actually Jewel’s long lost father, who’s leading the defense against encroaching loggers. Whether Blue can prove his worth to his disdainful new father-in-law and help offer an effective defense against the mounting threat may prove to be a staggering challenge for the formerly domesticated macaw.

Tom Huddleston of TimeOut writes, “Director Carlos Saldanha is all heart. Every movie he makes is stuffed with warmth, charm and simple but effective lessons about family, responsibility and friendship.”

RoboCop

Like our last featured film – RoboCop is set in the near future where drones manufactured by OmniCorp have become one of the dominant forms of policing worldwide but are barred by law from operating within the US. Recognizing the potential revenue being lost, OmniCorp owner Raymond Sellars embarks upon an ambitious marketing ploy of sorts – combining man and machine – to create a cybernetic cop. Lucky for him, he the perfect candidate falls into his lap more or less. After a car bomb leaves Detroit police officer Alex Murphy (Joel Kinnaman), critically wounded, Murphy’s wife Clara (Abbie Cornish) consents to having him resurrected as a crime-fighting robot. Albeit, one that finds himself slave to a corporate grade like the 1987 original.

Michael Phillips of the Chicago Tribune writes, “Intriguingly ambiguous – there’s a lot to enjoy. This movie comes at you with an idea or two, as well as every available gun blazing.” Boxoffice.com predicts that RoboCop will take in $28M this weekend.

Her

Set in a future Los Angeles, Her is the story of Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a soft-spoken, bushy mustached writer who composes heartfelt notes-for-hire at a company called beautifulhandwrittenletters.com. Pining over the pending divorce from his wife Catherine (Rooney Mara), with whom he is already separated, Theodore signs up for the latest in computer breakthroughs, the OS1 (operating system), in search of companionship.

Highly intelligent, eager to learn and able to speak for herself, his personal Siri-like OS calls herself Samantha (voiced by Scarlett Johansson). Chipper and smoky-voiced, she is an ever evolving consciousness. Not only does Samantha debug Theodore’s computer – she helps reboots his life as their rapport goes from flirty to romantic, and the two figure out how to make things work while learning and growing both as individuals and as a couple.

Christopher Orr of the Atlantic writes, “Her is a remarkably ingenious film but, more important, it is a film that transcends its own ingenuity to achieve something akin to wisdom. By turns sad, funny, optimistic, and flat-out weird, it is a work of sincere and forceful humanism.”

The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

In the second installment of The Hobbit trilogy, the 12 dwarves led by Thorin Oakenshield (Richard Armitage), along with Bilbo Baggins (Martin Freeman) and Gandalf the Grey (Ian McKellen), continue on their quest across Middle-earth to reclaim their homeland from Smaug (Benedict Cumberbatch), the dragon that drove them out in the exposition of the first movie, The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey.

Having survived the beginning of their unexpected journey, the company continues to travel east, encountering the skin-changer Beom and swarms of monsters in the treacherous forest of Mirkwood. After escaping capture by the dangerous wood-elves, the dwarves journey to Lake-town and finally to the Lonely mountain itself where they must face the greatest danger of all – the dragon Smaug.

Justin Chang of Variety writes, “Robust and action-packed, Jackson’s gargantuan undertaking maintains an impressive visual continuity with his incomparable Lord of the Rings trilogy. There’s an unmistakable pleasure in being transported back to his Middle-earth. As ever, in terms of logistical mastery and marshaling of resources in service of a grandly involving bigscreen [sic] entertainment, one couldn’t ask for a better ringmaster (so to speak) than Jackson.”

BoxOffice.com is predicting that The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug takes in $80M in its opening weekend. Its predecessor, An Unexpected Journey, opened at $84.6, so we’ll see what happens. Linked above is the official Warner Bros. site for The Hobbit where you can explore Middle Earth interactively, and it’s remarkable to say the least.

Carrie

A reimagining of Stephen King’s Carrie, Carrie White (Chloë Grace Moretz) is a shy girl bullied relentlessly by her peers and sheltered by her deeply religious mother (Julianne Moore). But when Carrie gets pushed past her breaking point at prom, she wreaks vengeance on her high school classmates.

David Rooney of The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Director Kimberly Peirce’s respectful Carrie overhaul is an earnest yet engrossing take on the original. What’s more, it captures the tender, tortured mother-daughter conflict at the center of Stephen King’s indestructibly compelling story in vivid performances from Chloe Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore.”

Gravity

Veteran astronaut Matt Kowalski (George Clooney), on what is slated to be his last mission to space, and his colleague Dr. Ryan Stone (Sandra Bullock), a medical engineer on her first, are marooned when a swath of debris destroys their shuttle killing every other astronaut on-and-off-board. Drifting 372 miles away from Earth and cut off from any human contact, their only hope for survival is to quickly travel to a Soviet space station in search of a usable escape module before running out of oxygen all while avoiding more lethal debris.

Stephanie Zacharek of The Village Voice writes, “Gravity is remarkable. Both lyrical and terrifying, director Alfonso Cuarón merges the two, sending us into free fall along with his characters in the kind of movie that makes you feel more connected to the world rather than less.”

BoxOffice.com predicts that Gravity will earn $42M in its debut weekend. As of publishing, the movie is holding a solid 98% on RottenTomatoes.com with 99 reviews, only two of which are rotten.

Prisoners

When Keller Dover’s (Hugh Jackman) six-year-old daughter and her young friend are kidnapped on Thanksgiving, he decides to take matters into his own hands. After the sole suspect, Alex Jones (Paul Dano), is detained and subsequently cut loose due to insufficient evidence, Dover takes him captive in an attempt to find out what he did with the girls, who he believes are still alive. But the further he goes to get the man to confess, the closer he comes to losing his soul.

Owen Gleiberman of Entertainment Weekly writes, Prisoners is a dazzlingly potent, ambitious, and complex movie – a film that forces you to ask questions that have no easy answers. At its heart is something primitive and elemental and gripping.” BoxOffice.com predicts that Prisoners will earn around $21M in its opening weekend.

We’re the Millers

David Burke (Jason Sudeikis) is a small-time pot dealer whose clientele consists of soccer moms and the like. But when he gets jumped by a group of punks, he’s out both product and cash leaving him in major debt with his supplier, Brad (Ed Helms).

In order to square himself with Brad, David has to smuggle his next weed shipment in from Mexico. And by twisting the arms of his neighbors, cynical stripper Rose (Jennifer Aniston), wannabe-customer and actual virgin Kenny (Will Poulter), and runaway-teen Casey (Emma Roberts), he devises a foolproof cover for drug smuggling: a fake family.

Jon Niccum of the Kansas City Star writes, “In a summer awash in lackluster action blockbusters and inevitable comedy sequels, We’re the Millers is a welcome arrival. A fresh premise, gifted cast and relentlessly abrasive tone make it one of the standout comedies of the year.”

BoxOffice.com is predicting that We’re the Millers generates about $22M in its opening weekend.

The Wolverine

Summoned to Japan by a comrade from World War 2, Logan (aka Wolverine) is presented the opportunity to end his curse of near immortality. Born with a mutant healing factor that allows him to recover from virtually any wound, disease or toxin at an accelerated rate, the healing factor also slows down his aging process, enabling him to outlive everyone around him. Vulnerable for the first time and pushed to his limits, Wolverine becomes embroiled in a conflict that forces him to confront Yakuza, ninjas and samurai, but the greatest battle of all is the one where Logan tiptoes between being a monster and becoming a human being.

Scott Collura of IGN writes, “This story paints a deep and compelling portrait of Logan, a haunted character that Hugh Jackman still finds new ways to play all these years later. A standalone adventure for the classic character that reminds us that there’s more to this genre than universe-building and crossovers, The Wolverine is the superhero movie surprise of the summer.”

Jocelyn Noveck of the Associated Press writes, “At this point Hugh Jackman could play the role in his sleep — but he doesn’t, and the nuances he and director James Mangold bring to the character lift this enterprise up from the usual blockbuster-sequel fare.”

BoxOffice.com is predicting that The Wolverine opens at $72M this weekend.

Rating: PG-13 // Genre: Action, Adventure, Fantasy // Runtime: 2 hr. and 6 min. // Starring: Hugh Jackman, Famke Janssen, Will Yun Lee // Directed by: James Mangold // Written by: Mark Bomback, Scott Frank, Christopher McQuarrie // Produced by: Twentieth Century Fox, Marvel Entertainment, Donners’ // Distributed by: Twentieth Century Fox

The Conjuring

Based on a true story, The Conjuring tells the tale of Roger and Carolyn Perron (Ron Livingston and Lili Taylor) and their five daughters, who find that they’re not the only inhabitants in their newly bought two-story lake house. The signs, though not-so-innocuous-even-at-first (e.g., slamming doors, eerie presences, mysterious bruises), proceed to worsen.

Feeling increasingly tormented, the Perrons enlist the help of paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga), a demonologist and clairvoyant made famous by their investigation into the Amityville Horror, in what will prove to be the most terrifying case of their lives.

Sheri Linden of The Hollywood Reporter writes, “On the basis of through-the-roof reactions at test screenings, Warners and New Line moved the film’s release from January to the summer tentpole season, a decision that should pay off with sizzling summer receipts from young adults. But the handsomely shot, expertly button-pushing scare-fest has the polish and the cast to draw older audiences who grew up on shockers built from performances rather than CGI.”

Justin Chang of Variety calls it, “A sensationally entertaining old-school freak out and one of the smartest, most viscerally effective thrillers in recent memory. Director James Wan’s sixth and best feature is pull-out-the-stops horror filmmaking of a very sophisticated order.”

BoxOffice.com is predicting that The Conjuring debuts at $30M.

Pacific Rim and Grown Ups 2

Pacific Rim

In the near future, giant monsters known as “Kaiju” have risen from a portal in a crevasse beneath the Pacific Ocean, resulting in a war that takes millions of lives and consumes humanity’s resources for years on end.

To combat the Kaiju, massive robots, piloted by humans, called “Jaegers” are developed to fight off the menace. But even they prove vulnerable against the giant monsters. On the verge of defeat, the forces defending mankind have no choice but to turn to two unlikely heroes to make a final stand.

Robbie Collin of The Telegraph says, “At first, watching Pacific Rim feels like rediscovering a favorite childhood cartoon – but del Toro has flooded the project with such affection and artistry that, rather than smiling nostalgically, you find yourself enchanted all over again.” Todd McCarthy of The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Guillermo del Toro’s imaginative sci-fi epic is everything that monster movies since the beginning of time might have wished they could be.” Angela Watercutter of Wired writes, “Pacific Rim is literally the most awesome movie of the summer.”

Boxoffice.com is predicting that Pacific Rim opens at  around $38M this weekend. I’m going to put my prediction out there and guess $52M+.

07/17/2013 Edit: I was most certainly wrong. Pacific Rim opened at almost $38M on the dot.

Rating: PG-13 // Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi // Runtime: 2 hr. and 11 min. // Starring: Charlie Hunnam, Idris Elba, Rinko Kikuchi // Directed by: Guillermo del Toro // Written by: Travis Beacham & Guillermo del Toro // Produced by: Warner Bros., Legendary Pictures // Distributed by: Warner Bros.

Grown Ups 2

The all-star comedy cast from Grown Ups returns for more summertime laughs. Since the end of the first film, Lenny (Adam Sandler) has moved his family back to his hometown where the kids can ride bikes to school, and he gets to hang out with pals: Eric (Kevin James), Kurt (Chris Rock), and Marcus (David Spade).  What quickly becomes obvious is that between old bullies, new bullies, schizophrenic bus drivers, drunk cops and costumed party crashers, sometimes crazy follows you.

Boxoffice.com predicts that Grown Ups 2 will open at $47M.

The Heat and White House Down

The Heat

Sarah Ashburn (Sandra Bullock) is a hotshot FBI agent who’s utterly incapable of relating to other people. Though supremely competent, she’s resented around the office and forced to endure overt condescension. Her boss, Hale (Demian Bichir) thinks that her lack of social skills might stand in the way of a promotion, so he sends her off to Boston to track down a drug kingpin but also see if she can work well with others. It’s there that she meets Boston PD officer Shannon Mullins (Melissa McCarthy), a take-no-prisoners cop who works the streets in a uniquely hostile way that terrifies even her superiors. They couldn’t be more incompatible.

But when they join forces, they become the last thing anyone expected: buddies.

Alonso Duralde of The Wrap writes, “Looking back at Sandra Bullock’s career, it appears that she’s at her best when she’s got a co-star who keeps her on her toes. McCarthy shines here, matching her physical prowess with a genius for verbal comedy, bringing out the Oscar-winner’s best. There probably won’t be a funnier movie this year.”

**One of the Bravo guys, Daniel Arriola, saw The Heat at CinemaCon back in April and calls it a guaranteed success. He doesn’t usually watch comedies but laughed throughout the movie.**

Rating: R // Genre: Action, Adventure, Crime // Runtime: 1 hr. and 57 min. // Starring: Sandra Bullock, Melissa McCarthy, Demián Bichir, Marlon Wayans // Directed by: Paul Feig // Written by: Katie Dippold // Produced by: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Chernin Entertainment, Dune Entertainment  // Distributed by: Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation

White House Down

John Cale (Channing Tatum) is an employee of the US Capitol Police assigned to guarding the Speaker of the House. With aspirations of one day becoming a Secret Service agent tasked with protecting the President of the United States, James Sawyer (Jamie Foxx), Cale manages to wrangle an interview at the White House.

Unfortunately for him, the person he has to go through is Carol Finnerty (Maggie Gyllenhaal), a woman scorned. Once upon a time, she and Cale had dated. Unwilling to break the bad news to his daughter Emily (Joey King), Cale takes her on a conveniently timed White House tour. It’s when a group of terrorists led by Emil Stenz (Jason Clarke) commences an assault on the White House, that the Capitol Police officer is called upon to save the day while trying to keep his daughter out of danger.

Kenneth Turan of the Los Angeles Times writes, “White House Down is a hoot and a half, a shameless popcorn entertainment that is preposterous and diverting in just about equal measure. With action so continuous and so convincingly photographed by cinematographer Anna Foerster– it rarely leaves you the leisure for mature reflection.”

Rating: PG-13 // Genre: Action, Drama, Thriller // Runtime: 2 hr. and 11 min. // Starring: Channing Tatum, Jamie Foxx, Maggie Gyllenhaal // Directed by: Roland Emmerich// Written by: James Vanderbilt // Produced by: Mythology Entertainment, Centropolis Entertainment, Iron Horse Entertainment // Distributed by: Columbia Pictures, Sony Pictures Releasing

Epic and The Hangover III

When teenager Mary Katherine (Amanda Seyfried) loses her mother to illness, she is forced to go live with her eccentric father, Professor Bomba (Jason Sudeikis), a crackpot inventor completely obsessed with the idea that a community of miniature people exists in the forest.

Though initially skeptical, MK is magically transformed, in a chance encounter, into a tiny person by Queen Tara (Beyoncé Knowles) and tasked with saving the world of Moonhaven and its Leafmen inhabitants from falling into the evil hands of Mandrake (Christoph Waltz) and his army of Boggans.

Epic takes its inspiration from William Joyce’s book The Leaf Men and the Grave Good Bugs. Stephen Holden of The New York Times writes, “As you watch its characters zoom through a lush forest on the backs of hummingbirds, the gorgeous 3-D adventure comedy Epic suggests a warmer, fuzzier Avatar, with a green heart. Directed by Chris Wedge, the movie is a hymn to nature rendered in phantasmagoric detail as refined as anything I’ve seen in a computer-animated family film.”

HSX is predicting that Epic takes in $38.5M this weekend.

The Hangover III

It’s been two years since the last Hangover movie, and three-quarters of the Wolf Pack have settled down: Phil (Bradley Cooper), Stu (Ed Helms) and Doug (Justin Bartha) are happily living uneventful lives at home. But still lacking a sense of purpose is the group’s black sheep Alan, who has ditched his meds and given in to his natural impulses.

Or at least he does so until disaster strikes.

In the aftermath of a personal crisis, the Wolf Pack convinces Alan to check into a psychiatric treatment facility by promising to drive him there themselves. Things start to go wrong en route when the group is assaulted, and Doug is kidnapped by a gang of masked thugs led by crime-boss Marshall (John Goodman).

Now the one person that can help them is Mr. Chow (Ken Jeong), their partner in crime who inflicts as much trouble on them as is humanly possible.

Joe Neumaier of New York Daily News, “A hysterical crowd-pleaser, director Todd Phillips’ wild ride through the mind of the American guy that lopes easily from epic set-pieces to male rite-of-passage shenanigans.” HSX is predicting that The Hangover Part 3 earns $67.7M

The Great Gatsby

The Great Gatsby follows Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire) as he leaves the Midwest in search of the American dream in the spring of 1922. A would-be writer of modest means, Nick rents a small house in West Egg next door to the mysterious self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio) and across the bay from his cousin, Daisy (Carey Mulligan) and her husband, Tom Buchanan (Joel Edgerton). Anyone who’s anyone attends Gatsby’s extravagant parties where the booze flows (despite a ban on alcohol better known as prohibition) and excess is realized.

It’s only after Nick and Gatsby become friends that we learn that Daisy was Gatsby’s sweetheart before he was sent off to war and all that he’s done since, he’s done for her. Gatsby wants to believe he and Daisy can rewind the clock to a better time when the two were in love with one another. “If I could just get back to the start,” he says. But as Nick reminds him, “You can’t repeat the past.”

Lou Lumenick of the New York Post writes, “Leonardo DiCaprio makes a splendid, Oscar-caliber Gatsby, capturing the dark side behind his affected bonhomie as no actor has done since Alan Ladd in 1949, and he’s perfectly abetted by Tobey Maguire’s hard-drinking Nick. The Great Gatsby stands out like a beacon in a sea of silly blockbusters.”

The film will be distributed in standard, 3D and RealD formats, and HSX predicts that it will take in $37M in its 3,500 theater wide release this weekend. For downloads; additional trailers; TV spots; galleries and a very cool guide to style, check out the official The Great Gatsby website.

Key Art & Print Production

They’re everywhere: on billboards and buses, in your morning paper and on the sides of both buildings and blogs. Jules Cheret, a French painter and lithographer, is credited with creating the first movie poster in 1890 for a short film called Projections Artistiques. And for more than 100 years, movie posters have been used to fill seats in theaters around the world by piquing curiosity and, other times, by bewildering.

But what is key art?

Key art is the main image, or images, used in movie marketing that distill a movie by branding it towards a particular target audience, and, sans the trailer, it’s the first interaction potential moviegoers will have with a film. As a graphic design agency that specializes in movie ad production, our aim is to create ads that engage, inform and, most of all, entice viewers to want to watch the film. Title treatments are designed to accompany the aforementioned along with quotes, tag lines and billing blocks, the last being part of a legal requirement. From conception to completion, design is a collaborative process involving creative direction, art direction, copywriting, photography and then production. Once a department finishes their work, it’s passed down the line, so the next department or vendor can fulfill their project obligations.

When it comes to print production here at the Bravo Design studio, we determine the best method of execution and produce comps and/or mechanicals based on concepts drawn up either here or through our affiliates, maintaining consistent file preparation suitable for mass production by publications or vendors, the last of which is done when we receive client approval. The final product can take the form of newspapers and magazines ads, standees, displays, one sheets, banners, billboards or anything of the like.

Here are some of our favorite projects from the last year or so:

Evil Dead

Mia (Jane Levy) invites two friends – Olivia (Jessica Lucas) and high school teacher Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) – along with her big brother, David (Shiloh Fernandez), and his girlfriend Natalie (Elizabeth Blackmore) to accompany her out to her family’s cabin deep in the woods as she tries to kick a drug habit cold-turkey. There, Eric finds a mysterious flesh bound Book of the Dead filled with horrific illustrations, mysterious symbols and directions not to read aloud anything that appears in its ancient pages. Unfortunately for all parties involved, Eric discards caution by the wayside awakening a familiar demon for a new generation of young victims.

John DeFore of the Hollywood Reporter writes, “True to the essence of its predecessor, the high production values and nonstop action offered here should also please younger genre fans who’ve never bothered to rent it. Evil Dead delivers satisfyingly disgusting effects that serve an ever-accelerating action pace and exposes the demons at its core.”

HSX predicts that Evil Dead will earn around $20M in its opening weekend.

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone

Burt Wonderstone (Steve Carell) and Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) are a successful pair of old-school magicians who have been performing magic tricks together since they first teamed up as kids to entertain their classmates and have subsequently ruled the Las Vegas Strip, raking in a fortune with illusions as big as Burt’s growing ego. Their greatest deception, however, is their public friendship as the two have secretly grown to loathe one another. The straw that critically injures the figurative camel comes when Anton is, literally, critically injured by Burt during one of their performances, resulting in the two parting ways.

It’s only when Burt is overshadowed by a popular street-magician named Steve Gray (Jim Carrey), whose cult-following surges with each outrageous stunt (e.g., not blinking and/or urinating for days on end), that he must convince Anton to return to the act, so he can salvage his title – as well as their friendship – and get back in touch with what made him love magic in the first place.

Shaun Munro of Whatculture.com writes, “Even if all the beats unfold exactly as you expect, it’s the film’s quirkily unrestrained sense of humor that sees it through, from the cartoonish exaggeration of the characters to the ludicrously overblown nature of the tricks themselves. It’s clear that everyone working on the project is having a lot of fun, and this transpires through to the audience. It’s got a clever undercurrent running through most of the humor, though its foremost concern is to beguile with its off-kilter nature.”

The Incredible Burt Wonderstone is opening tonight, Thursday the 14th, with special 10pm screenings. HSX is predicting that the film will earn around $18M in its debut weekend at 3,100+ theaters. For a hilarious gallery of TV spots and stills from the movie, check out the official homepage linked above where you can also “Wonder-fy yourself” by inserting a picture of your face onto any of the Burt Wonderstone posters.

A Good Day to Die Hard

John McClane (Bruce Willis) is back in the latest installment of the Die Hard franchise, A Good Day to Die Hard, where he travels to Russia to help his seemingly wayward son, Jack (Jai Courtnery), who unbeknownst to him is an undercover CIA operative working to arrange the defection of a well-connected whistleblower and political prisoner, Yuri Komarov (Sebastian Koch). Komarov claims to have a file with incriminating details on high-ranking government officials but is, inconveniently, being jailed on trumped-up charges, so it’s up to the two McClanes to team up, protect Komarov from being and recover the file.

Peter Debruge of Variety writes, “A surly papa bear determined to protect his endangered cub, this expendable, action-packed sequel works like gangbusters, giving the new Dolby Atmos super-surround system (debuted on Brave) a real workout. Things go bang, the McClanes get their share of battle scars and the trauma of it all proves the perfect bonding experience to heal old wounds.” HSX predicts that the newest Die Hard film will rake in somewhere between $38M-$43M in its 3,500 theater wide opening.

Bullet to the Head

In Bullet to the Head, Sylvester Stallone plays Jimmy Bobo, tattoo-enthusiast and hitman for hire. When his partner, Louis (Jon Seda), is murdered by former mercenary, Keegan (Jason Momoa), Bobo will stop at nothing to exact vengeance. In what would seem like an unlikely duo, he teams up with D.C. Detective Taylor Kwon (Sung Kang) who, not so coincidentally, has been dispatched to investigate the death of his own partner. Brought together by two savage murders, Bobo and Det. Kwon prepare to take on anyone and everyone who stands in their way, putting everything on the line to exact revenge.

Jordan Mintzer of The Hollywood Reporter writes, “Like the amped up comeback tour of two rockers who had their heyday sometime in the mid-’80s, Sylvester Stallone and director Walter Hill (48 Hrs., The Warriors) join forces delivering tons of kinetic wham-bam fight sequences and LOL one-liners and dishes out 90 minutes of old-school mayhem.”

Gangster Squad

Set in 1949 Los Angeles, Brooklyn-born mob king Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn) runs the city’s rackets profiteering hand over hand in drugs, guns and prostitution. And if he has his way, his empire will include every wire bet placed west of Chicago. He works with impunity having bought the police, politicians and journalists who sit in his pocket. That’s until Chief Parker (Nick Nolte) organizes a covert group of operators made up of LAPD outsiders led by Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) and Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who seek to carry out justice outside the courthouse without prejudice; hence the movie’s tagline: “No names. No badges. No mercy.”

Alonso Duralde of The Wrap writes, “With its gleaming roadsters, sexy dames and swanky nightspots, Gangster Squad never lets up on its momentum. You’ll be forgiven for thinking that you’re watching The Untouchables II.” Rex Reed of The New York Observer raves, “With its exotic Hollywood locations, gorgeous, tailored, camera-ready clothes fit for a fashion layout, sleek cars, jazz music and glamorous cinematography, it’s a cross between L.A. Confidential and The Untouchables and one of the most exhilarating and entertaining action films in recent memory.” HSX.com predicts that Gangster Squad makes $19M in its opening weekend.

The Hobbit

The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey is the first in a three-part series that follows Bilbo Baggins, homebody and hobbit, as he and a company of dwarves, led by Thorin Oakenshield and Gandalf the Grey, venture to reclaim the Lonely Mountain pilfered by the dragon, Smaug. The journey leads them from Bilbo’s home in the Shire through the elven stronghold at Rivendell and then the goblin infested Misty Mountains where Bilbo meets a creature with a powerful ring that is inextricably tied to the fate of Middle-earth in ways no one can yet fathom.

Also noteworthy is the fact that The Hobbit was filmed at 48 frames per second; the standard is 24. That much has received mixed bag reviews so far. But like most innovations, we’re sure it’ll just need some getting used to.

Roger Moore writes, “The settings are gorgeous. The effects are spectacular, and Gollum looks more real than ever.” And since The Hobbit is the only new release coming out this weekend, HSX is predicting that it’ll take in about $94M.

Life of Pi

Life of Pi, based on Yann Martel’s critically acclaimed novel, follows a shipwreck where a young man named Pi Patel (Suraj Sharma) finds himself stranded on a lifeboat with another survivor, a fearsome Bengal tiger named Richard Parker. For those wondering how Richard found himself on a raft lost at sea, he and the other animals aboard are (or were up until the shipwreck) part of a zookeeper’s cargo. From there, Pi has to fend for his and Richard’s survival all while negotiating with the irritable and often hungry Bengal to improve their odds and make the most of their dire situation on a seemingly endless expanse of sea.

Roger Ebert writes, “Ang Lee’s Life of Pi is a miraculous achievement of storytelling and a landmark of visual mastery.” Lou Lumenick of the New York Post says, “It’s the best-looking film I’ve seen this year and possibly so far this century. It’s so hypnotically beautiful that people will be using it to calibrate their new TV monitors. HSX estimates that Life of Pi will open at around $27M.
